Over the weekend B-Fast’s JANET B, HALEY-ELIZABETH and the DECISIVE fished the shoals-water on the bank. On Friday 5/14, Frank Pitt’s group from Jersey City , NJ and Lou Hembrow from Leominster, MA, got into some medium cod to 15 pounds--an improvement over the beginning of the week. Gary Brown’s group from Putnam, CT and John Karoll from Lindenhurst, NY had as repeat of Friday’s results, filling the coolers with mostly medium cod in 100 ft of water using jigs and teasers as well as having beautiful flat calm seas. Sunday’s trips with Joe Garyantes of Monroe, CT and Harry Parker of Walpole, MA had the great weather however, the fishing was much slower than the two previous days. Possibly, the new moon tides were the reason for the bait being scattered thus the inconsistent fishing. We have a couple of dates available for fill-ins in May and June for cod fishing.

Over the weekend both the mouth of the North/South River and Boston Harbor were hot-spots for early striped bass action. School-sized stripers up to 25" were chasing herring with an occassional keeper mixed in. Light-tackle fishing with Fin-S and shad-bodies with 3/8 to 1/2 oz. jig heads on spinning-gear worked well, while larger epxoy-head deceivers and Half & Halfs worked well on fly tackle. Orvis "Depth Charge" line in 300-400 grain weight works well to get the bigger flies down to the fish. Further, a braided fast-sinking leaders is especially helpful in the early season getting the flies down to the bass. Both Fly line and leaders, including fluro-carbon material, as well as an extensive selection of local fly patterns are available from Henry Weston Outfitters. B-Fast, as well as Capt. Charlie Lemieux, will be guiding fisheries researchers from UMASS in their Striped Bass Growth Study this week on the North River. Following that, we will be working Boston Harbor with clients until the big bass show up off Cohasset's Minot's ledge.
