3/11/2000 Fishing Report for Tarpon Springs to Crystal River, Fl. By Capt. Dennis Royston

The weather has been great the last 10 days. Cool in the mornings and around 80 degree by afternoon. Low winds, 5 to 10 knots, Just about perfect. A cool front is expected over the weekend. Light rain is expected and God knows we need it.

Fishing has been almost as good as the weather. Trout up to 26" are being caught on the flats and back country creeks. Best bait have been 1/8 to 1/4 oz. Jigs with grub tail, shad tail or 6" floating worms. Live green backs(Pilchards) are doing well around points and deeper holes in the creeks.

Snook are moving out to there spring haunts. Look for them to be eating green backs, small pin fish or large shrimp. Top water baits as well as jigs are working. Remember the new slot limit this year is 26" min. to 34" max.

Redfish are starting to school and show up in numbers around Oyster bars and other hard bottom areas. Jigs, spoons and small top water plugs are starting to produce good catches. Live bait - try green backs, chubs, sand fleas and shrimp.

When drifting the flats a bonus of Cobia, Spanish Mackerel, Blue Fish, Pompano are also in the same areas as the Trout. Note: Cobia must be 33" at the fork of the tail. I have seen a number of boats gaffing and keeping short fish lately .
