Anglers experienced some of the best cod fishing of the season this week on the Stellwagen Bank's shoalwater. A new school of much larger cod and pollock moved in, feeding on the plethora of herring, mackerel, and sand eels, allowing fisherman form NJ,NY,PA, and MA to have a field day with fish over 20#. Tyronne Jackson's groups had 10 cod over 20# on Friday the 26th. They filled the boxes with mostly medium sized cod. On Saturday, Capt. Al guided the Rumpf group from Farmingdale,NY into 6 cod over 20#. One angler dropped a steaker estimated at 35# plus at the boat. Mixed in have been pollock 12-20# as well as a few haddock and wolfs--all on jigs and teasers. The fishing on Sunday, was slower in the morning, however by the afternoon, George Sterinsky's group from Elizabeth,NJ fishing on the JANET B, got their quota of 20 pounders. This has been the most consistent fishing for Big cod of the Y2K season. Water temperature and bait concentrations are favorable for this fishing to continue through June.
