Surface Fishing
It is simply amazing to watch a big bass nail a surface bait. Just before dark and just before dawn are the best times to slap on a surface lure, such as a Zara Spook, POP-R, Skitter Pop, Hula Popper, Rubber Frog (I don't believe in using live ones) or a Crazy Crawler. Don't even think about starting to night-fish until at least one hour after the sun has set. In our experience, most of our best night-fishing fish has come much later than that. The reason it is not good fishing during that one hour is because the bass have settled down after heavy eating during the evening. It can occasionally produce fish, but not too often. With surface lures a long, slow retrieve works best. This method gives the fish an easier target to hit. Attaching a trailer hook to these is a good idea for the bass often miss the lure and this will increase the chance of a landed fish. Don't forget to change your retrieve of your lure incase one doesn't look appetizing enough for the bass to strike it.
