Tying Topwater Bass Bugs

Bass bugs are one of our favorite flies to tie. The two most common types of head for surface bass bugs are either deer hair or cork. Some factors you should take into consideration before tying your fly are: corks can make a larger, chugging sound and has a more anticipated affect in that its course stays constant. Corks are, for the most part, easier to cast compared to deer hair because they are less wind resistant. A deer hair bug's action is less predictable because after many cast and or fish strikes, the bug's deer hair may change shape causing it to have a different action. Deer hair bugs may become waterlogged after continuos use so be sure to have more than one along in your fly box. A good advantage to using deer hair is that after a bass strikes and misses, it is likely to come back for the bait will feel soft and realistic. If this happened to a cork bug, the bass would feel the solid head of the fly and most likely loose interest.

We usually tie our bass bugs on a 2 to 8 sized stinger or streamer hook. Size 6 is the most common to use and probably one of our favorites. Some of the best colour combinations are, all yellow, all light purple, and blended yellow, red, and green. As we say often, all black works well for evening and night fishing. We usually prefer to use natural deer hair opposed to dyed deer hair, but coloured deer hair is quite obviously a wanted factor when tying bugs such as a frog. Saddle hackle is the best type of hackle to use for these flies. We also sometimes use black and light brown squirrel tail when tying "funky chickens". Marabou is also a good material to add to your fly. Colours such as black, yellow, and white are good choices.
