Fishing For Pike In Pre and Post Spawn Seasons
Pike will eat well in the pre spawn time period. In the spring, pike could be spawning from March, to, in some places June. In 1999, in southern Ontario, we found that the pike were spawning from April 2 to 15. Pike spawn in shallow weed beds, which have a soft bottom and in some cases a slow and small feeder stream. The shallow water will heat faster and the soft bottom can hold heat better than hard rocky bottoms. The water's temperature in the correct bay should be about 68o for the perfect spawning temperatures. At about 60o smaller males will arrive. The larger females will come later and hang at the first drop off for the remaining time until the correct temperatures arrive. These females will be full of eggs and if caught they should always be returned to spawn.
Fishing during the actual spawn is illegal in some areas, so check with your local authorities. When given the chance to fish in this time the pickings are slim, for the pike have more important business at hand. Once the pike are done with their spawning they are completely worn out and will rest in the shallows. If the weather stays cool enough for the pike they will stay in their spawning grounds. This provides the angler with some magnificent pike fishing opportunities. During this time, pike will hit almost anything. Covering water is a good bet to improve your fishing success. We suggest that you use fairly large spinnerbaits, bucktails, or shallow diving crankbaits.
