Walleye - What Lures For What Conditions?

Water Clarity

Clear water

For these conditions, you want to use lures that are very realistic looking because the fish can see every detail much better than any other time. Examples: Cotton Cordel's Riplin' Red Fin (Bob Izumi's signature series), most Excalibur lures, and some Rapalas.

Stained/muddy water

In this type of water, the main idea is to get the fish's attention. To do this use bright baits with rattles and scent. Examples: Cotton Cordel's Riplin' Red Fin (chartreuse), Wally Diver (chartreuse), Rapalas (bright colors with little detail)

Weather

Overcast/windy

Walleye will become more active under these conditions. Their strike zone will enlarge so cover lots of water. You can troll or do the fan cast with our favorite walleye crankbaits. A worm on a spinner also works well. If later in day, use brighter lures but during mid-day use more detailed lures.

Bright/sill

the walleye's strike zone will shrink making catching more difficult, but is still possible. Trolling is a good method for these conditions. Use deep detailed crankbaits or a "poor man's downrigger" with spinner and live bait or detailed floating stickbait.

Times of Day

Color will depend on water and weather conditions.

Morning

shallow water trolling works well at this time of day, as well as casting with crankbaits. Mepps (spinners) with worms work well.

Noon

trolling with deep diving lures, well-weighted stickbaits or with the use of a "poor man's downrigger"

Evening

shallow trolling and casting with crankbaits. Mepps (spinners) with worms also are very productive.

Night

bright, noisy and shallow crankbait or brightly coloured stickbaits (chartreuse is a personal favorite colour).
