Tuna Hunter leaves Cape Ann Marina at 7:00 AM and returns at 4:00 PM. We fish 15-25 miles from land - opportunity to enjoy a gorgeous sunrise on the ride out. The grounds we fish are Tillies Bank, Jeffries Ledge, and the famous plateau Stellwagen Bank. On the top of the bank, our depth is 100 feet; off the edge is 300 feet or more.
Tuna Hunter has a state-of-the-art fish finder for locating schools of cod. We may drift or anchor, and will likely move to a number of different favorite spots throughout the day. We may see whales on the fishing grounds - always and awesome "extra". We will be fishing with bait and jigs. The bait usually catches cod, haddock, and ugly wolf fish. The cod eat the jigs that represent a herring. The size of the cod are up to 50 pounds; the average is 15-20 pounds. Haddock are once again plentiful, which makes for some tasty fillets for dinner. Pollock of all sizes are also encountered.
While preparing for an off-shore cod trip, one should bring an extra jacket, white-soled shoes, sunglasses, sunscreen, and a hat. Particularly in Spring and Fall, extra, warm clothing is in order. Pack a lunch and drinks for your party. Our policy on alcohol is that beer or wine is fine in moderation. If anyone gets drunk the day is over!
We will fillet and bag your catch at the end of the day. Bag ice is available at the dock, if one needs a fresh bag for the trip home.
Cod/haddock trips generally offer larger numbers of fish, bottom fishing with conventional Penn reels and Fenwick rods. All Tuna Hunter crew will provide assitance or instruction as needed. Use of all tackle, and all bait and gear is included as part of our service. We will bait your hook, tie lines and handle your fish for you - that's our job! We leave the hooking and reeling to you - so bring strong arms!
